What is Zakat-ul-Fitr?
Zakat-ul-Fitr, also known as Fitrana, is an obligatory donation that is paid before or on the first day of Eid-ul-Fitr. Although it is highly recommended to fulfill before the end of Ramadan.
Difference Between Zakat & Zakat-ul-Fitr
One of the major differences lies in the due dates, where Zakat can be paid at any given time of the year once your wealth has reached the threshold, Zakat-ul-Fitr is fulfilled before the end of Ramadan or at least before Eid-ul-Fitr prayers.
Moreover, Zakat is obligatory for those who have excess wealth & are above the age of puberty. While Zakat-ul-Fitr is compulsory for everyone with excess wealth regardless of age. But since a child cannot pay his dues, it is the responsibility of the head of the household to pay in their stead.
Another difference is the amount. Zakat-ul-Fitr barely exceeds $12 per person, while Zakat is a percentage of the total wealth in savings
“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordained Zakat ul Fitr to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer; but it is a mere Sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer.”

How is Zakat-ul-Fitr fulfilled?
Any Muslim with excess needs must fulfill Zakat-ul-Fitr, which is obligatory for every household member, but the head of the house can fulfill it at their behest. Each person must fulfill $12 (equivalent to a pack of flour or rice).
